Starting a new school year is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. Between decorating your classroom, planning lessons, organizing supplies, and meeting new students, it's easy to forget about the little touches that make the first week extra special.
One of my favorite traditions is welcoming students with a small surprise on their desk. It doesn't have to be expensive, just something thoughtful that lets students know they're valued from day one.
Here are some of my favorite welcome back gift ideas that are budget-friendly, classroom-tested, and easy to prepare before Meet the Teacher Night.
1. Personalized Welcome Bookmarks
A personalized bookmark is a simple gift that students will use throughout the entire school year. Add each child's name or a fun reading-themed quote to make it feel extra special. Leave it on their desk during Meet the Teacher Night or tuck it inside the first book they'll read in your classroom. It's an inexpensive way to show students that you've been preparing just for them.

2. Fun Pencils
You can never go wrong with a brand-new pencil! Colorful pencils with fun sayings or seasonal designs instantly make students excited about learning. I like placing one on every desk with a small tag that says, "You've got the WRITE stuff!" It's a practical gift that students will actually use from the very first day.

You can add cute tags to them too! Simply tape this tag to the pencil and place them on the students' desks.

3. Mini Play-Doh
Mini containers of Play-Doh are always a classroom favorite! They're perfect for morning tubs, indoor recess, STEM challenges, or simply helping students settle their first-day jitters. Students love discovering one waiting on their desk, and you'll have a classroom supply they'll continue using throughout the year.
Kids love finding one waiting on their desk during the first week.
4. Erasers
Novelty erasers are inexpensive, colorful, and surprisingly exciting for elementary students. Whether you choose animals, food, sports, or seasonal themes, they add a little fun to every pencil box. They're also great for classroom rewards later in the year, so buying a larger pack is always a smart investment.
5. Glow Sticks
Do you want a welcome gift that students will talk about long after the first day? Hand each student a glow stick with a tag that says, "Your future is bright!" It's a simple but memorable gift that also works wonderfully during classroom celebrations, reading under the desks with flashlights, or end-of-the-week rewards.
6. Bubble Wands
Bubbles bring instant smiles! Attach a cute tag that says, "I'm bubbling with excitement to learn with you this year!" and you've created an adorable welcome gift in just minutes. They're especially fun if you plan to head outside for recess on the first day and let students celebrate the beginning of a brand-new school year.
7. Individual Snack Treats
After a busy Meet the Teacher Night or an exciting first day, students are often hungry. A small individually wrapped snack is an easy way to help everyone recharge while making your classroom feel warm and welcoming. Goldfish, fruit snacks, pretzels, and mini popcorn bags are all affordable options—just be sure to check for food allergies before handing them out.
8. Mini Notebooks
Kids love having something that's completely their own. Mini notebooks are perfect for doodling, writing stories, keeping track of goals, or recording observations throughout the year. Buy them in bulk before school starts and you'll have an inexpensive gift that students can actually use all year long.
9. Sticker Packs
It's amazing how excited students get over stickers! A small sticker sheet can be used to decorate folders, water bottles, notebooks, or planners. Better yet, if you purchase a classroom-sized pack, you'll have plenty left over to use for homework, positive behavior, and classroom incentives throughout the school year.
10. Crazy Straws
Crazy straws make the first day feel like a celebration! Pair one with a juice box or water bottle and attach a tag that says, "This is going to be a STRAW-some year!" It's a fun, inexpensive gift that's sure to get lots of smiles (and maybe a few giggles).
11. Friendship Bracelets
Help build classroom community from day one with colorful friendship bracelets. Students love wearing them, and they serve as a reminder that everyone belongs in your classroom family. They're also a wonderful conversation starter for students who may be feeling shy or nervous about meeting new classmates.
12. Mini Fidgets
The first week of school can feel overwhelming for many students. A small sensory fidget, such as a pop-it keychain or marble fidget, provides a fun surprise while also supporting students who benefit from movement or sensory input. They make wonderful desk prizes that students can continue using throughout the year.
13. Welcome Bags
Instead of choosing just one item, create a small welcome bag! Fill a paper sack or clear treat bag with a pencil, eraser, bookmark, sticker, and a sweet note. Students absolutely love opening their own little surprise, and it instantly creates excitement about being in your classroom.
14. Classroom Reward Coupons
Sometimes the best gifts don't cost anything at all. Create fun coupons that students can redeem later for special privileges like sitting with a friend, choosing a read-aloud book, being the teacher's helper, or listening to classroom music during independent work. Students treasure these opportunities far more than many physical prizes.
15. A Handwritten Welcome Note
Out of every welcome gift I've ever given, this one has probably meant the most. A short handwritten note telling each student how excited you are to have them in your classroom helps build relationships before learning even begins. Many students keep these notes tucked inside their desks or memory boxes long after the school year ends.
Bonus Tip: Keep an Extra Basket
I always keep a basket of extra welcome gifts on hand for:
- New students
- Students who enroll late
- Lost items
- Classroom rewards
Buying in bulk before school starts usually saves both time and money.
Make Meet the Teacher Night Even Easier
If you're planning your Meet the Teacher event, don't forget to create engaging stations that keep families busy while you have meaningful conversations with each student.
I love using a classroom scavenger hunt that guides families through important information while making everyone feel comfortable—especially those who are a little shy.

Final Thoughts
Your welcome gift doesn't need to be elaborate or expensive. The goal is simply to help every child feel seen, valued, and excited about the year ahead.
Whether it's a fun pencil, a bookmark, or a handwritten note, those small gestures often become some of the biggest memories students carry with them.
Happy Back to School season—and here's to an amazing year ahead!
